Top Score Tuesday is here! This week’s Top Scorer is Julian Wellman, from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is currently 18 years old and a senior at Greenhills School.

Q: What’s a fun fact about yourself?

A: Assuming this is posted on Tuesday, Nov. 1st, I turned 18 just yesterday, on Halloween! On a decidedly un-fun note, I probably spent a lot of the day writing college application essays.

Q: How did you find out about Expii?

A: Either I saw someone wearing an expii T-shirt and looked it up or I saw something Po-Shen Loh shared on Facebook; I don’t remember which came first. In any case, it was definitely good advertising. I also noticed a link to expii at the end of FiveThirtyEight‘s Riddler column.

Q: How do you use Expii?

A: Lately, I just do the weekly problem set. I’d like to start really using the main site some day.

Q: Why is your math background?

A: I’ve attended summer camps like the Ross Mathematics Program and participated in high school competitions a bit. I’ve learned a lot by looking things up whenever I hear about something I don’t understand that sounds interesting. I’m taking a rigorous math course at the University of Michigan this year and intend to major in math in college. I’ll stop this answer here before it turns into another college application essay.

Q: What’s your favorite area of math?

A: I worked on a research project in extremal combinatorics over the summer, which was pretty neat. In general I tend to be particularly interested in discrete math.
