This week’s Top Score Thursday features Aaron Yu from California! Aaron is 14 years old and a 9th grader at Proof School (a school for “kids who love math”!). Learn more about Aaron in his interview below.
Q: What’s a fun fact about yourself?
A: I moderate the sub-reddit /r/wholesomeanimemes, a friendly anime meme themed subreddit which is number one trending as of 3/8/17 and currently has over 5000 members.
Q: How did you find out about Expii?
A: I first heard about Expii when Dr. Po-Shen Loh gave a talk at my school and presented the “Cut the Rope” with Einstein problem. Later, a friend told me about the Spirit of Ramanujan.
Q: How do you use Expii?
A: I use it to discover new topics I don’t know about and to work on problems that require creative thinking. Expii Solve is also a good distraction for long car rides. I broke through the 1000 points on a trip back from Los Angeles.
Q: What is your math experience/background?
A: I get my math at school, on AoPS, Expii, books and movies like “The Man Who Knew infinity”, and just random google searches. Recently, I collaborated with classmates for a Math Burst projet counting paths on general finite graphs. It’s time for me to learn more graph theory.
Q: What is your favorite area of math?
A: My current favorite is Number Theory where the problem statements can be so simple yet so complex. Sometimes, the Queen of Mathematics looks like a mashup of the heaven, the hell, and everything in between.
Q: Anything else you would like to share?
A: I enjoy Lego, origami, karate, table tennis, and 8 or 9-ball pools. I also like watching anime, want to learn Japanese, and hope to visit Japan.
Thanks for being a part of the Expii community, Aaron!
